Aviation Headset Plug Types: GA Dual, LEMO, Helicopter and Adapters

Aviation headset connectors explained: GA dual plugs (PJ-055 and PJ-068), LEMO 6-pin panel power, U-174 helicopter, XLR 5-pin, and when adapters work.

Quick answer

Most US general aviation aircraft use GA dual plugs: a 1/4-inch PJ-055 headphone plug and a smaller PJ-068 microphone plug. Many newer aircraft add LEMO 6-pin jacks that also power ANR headsets. Helicopters commonly use a single U-174 plug, and some airliners use 5-pin XLR. Check every aircraft you fly and buy adapters for the others.

The wrong plug grounds you before engine start. Check the panel before buying.

Connector types

Connector Where Notes
GA dual plug (PJ-055 + PJ-068) Most US light aircraft Two plugs: headphone and mic
LEMO 6-pin Many newer aircraft and panels Single plug, provides ANR power
Redel 6-pin Some aircraft Similar role to LEMO
U-174/U Helicopters, military Single round plug
XLR 5-pin Some airliners Single plug

Adapters

Adapters let one headset work across aircraft types. Keep them short and secure, and test before flight. Some ANR headsets with panel-power plugs also have battery modules for aircraft without LEMO jacks.

Choosing

Buy the plug type of the aircraft you fly most. Flight school fleets often use GA dual plugs.

Common questions

What plug do most general aviation planes use?

GA dual plugs: a PJ-055 headphone plug and a PJ-068 microphone plug.

What is a LEMO plug?

A 6-pin connector that carries audio, mic and power, so ANR headsets run from aircraft power.

Can I use a GA headset in a helicopter?

With a GA-to-U-174 adapter, usually yes. Check impedance and fit with the aircraft's intercom.

Are headset adapters reliable?

Quality adapters work well, but add bulk and connection points. A native plug is better for an aircraft you fly regularly.
